German paratroopers in Italy - vignette

I decided to make a small vignette for my German paratroopers in tropical uniforms. I used extruded polystyrene for the first time. It´s very good material. The greatest advantage of this material is, that you can engrave various texture to it, using simple tools (pencil). There is no dust, which is typical for example when you work with gypsum. There is one disadvantage too... You can´t use synthetic based colours for painting, weathering etc.

So here we go...

Stones are engraved with pencil. I started with paving...

Engraving is finished :-)

Everything (wall, paving) is covered with several layers of highly diluted gypsum putty. It gives a better look to the stone wall and paving. Wall and paving is painted with base colour.

Then I continued with painting the paving and the stone wall. I used various shades of  acrylics (yellow, beige, brown). I use Pactra colours. The paving is photographed during the process of weathering. I use synthetic based colours usually, but if you work with extruded polystyrene, you have to use water based paint. I used school water paints (mix of black and dark brown).

Now it´s time to start with the vegetation.

That´s all for this moment.

  1. Olá Vlad,

I'm glad you decided to create a blog :)

You've done a good job on that base once again. I like how rich it is even though it's so small.

About my submarine,I'm planning to submerge it in clear resin. I don't know if it will work but I guess we'll find out :P

  2. Hello Francisco. Thanks for your comment. For me, you are the master in small vignettes. I always find lot of inspiration, when I´m looking at your minivignettes.

  3. Aha!!! You too have a blog!!! :-D
The dio looks great...for painting this type of foam i use cheap acrylic paint..the sort used for adding colours to normal wall paint. It acts as a base and then you can paint other colours on top.
The wood in my Saxon houses..it is real wood, from the bottom of old cupoard drawers...I didn´t paint it ;-D
    Greetings

  4. So, do I understand correctly? When I use acrylic paint on the foam, can I use synthetic colours(or oil colours diluted with synthetic thinner)for weathering later?
I saw the detail of the wooden parts of your saxon houses on Benno´s. It looks very good. Have you ever thought about using highly diluted burnt umber (oil paint + synthetic thinner) for weathering the wooden parts (made of real wood, balsa etc...). I used this technique on my "Trench mortar emplacement for weathering the wooden planking. If you remember ....

  6. Hello Rich, nice to see you on my blog. The vignette is finished, but I´m solving the problem with ivy now. I used foam from HEKI, but the colour looks quite inacurate to me. One day it looks O.K., next day it looks bad :-( I make some photos of the finished vignette and start voting: Replace the ivy made from HEKI foam - yes/not :-))
